WOOD WORKSHOP (project)

Workshop at the Salines Royales d'Arc et Senans with Kinya Maruyama, spring 2002.

-The salines Royales : The salt works was a royal factory created to produce salt and designed by Claude Nicolas Ledoux under the reign of Louis XV. The Salines are located in the Doubs next to the forest of Chaux (30km/15km) because of the great energy from the wood. The wood was needed to evaporate the water and keep the salt from it. So the forest and the Salines are deeply linked.

-Kinya Maruyama : A japanese architect from the "Team Zoo" collective came with 15 of his students from Japan, Italy and England. Kinya Maruyama previously worked on the "Lieu Unique" in Nantes in 2001.

-The project :After the project of the century's pavilion (cosmos and infinite for me), the Salines think of us to make this workshop and to bring some fresh wood in the place. The idea was to make 6 wood constructions between the building of the half circle.
Our team was composed of 4 french students, 2 Japanese and a mexican Erasmus student.
After a 3 days at the Salines, the week of conception took place in Grenoble. We started to make models with materials from the forest and draw sketches of it "from the point of view of the insect" as Kinya said.
Kinya proposed an interesting working method, we had to make the models turning in the group, each student had to continue and evolve the model/sketches of another. After many rounds, we realized we were all interesting in the vibration of wood as well as the frequencies of it. In a way it was pretty close to the evocation of music from and in the woods...
So we worked on densification and compression to express the feeling of a whole forest or the presence of the music. And variations on the theme ...

After presenting the projects to the Salines Royales, we realized that only 3 projects could be built, mainly because of the short time to get the wood and to build the structures. our project have been selected but we had to change the site for an equilibrium preoccupation. (the Salines are really symmetric). So we moved to one of the garden which also permit to reduce the considerable amount of wood.
